District Wellness Policy
San Leandro Unified School District is dedicated to providing environments that promote and protect children's health, well-being, and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity.
Our Commitment to Student & Staff Wellness
The Board of Education recognizes the direct link between student health and learning. Research shows that good nutrition and physical activity lead to higher attendance, improved academic grades, fewer disciplinary referrals, and overall student well-being.
Our district wellness policy guides meal nutrition standards, physical education curricula, classroom celebration guidelines, and campus fundraising, ensuring all foods available on campus contribute to lifelong wellness.
Accomplishments of the District Wellness Policy
Highlights of progress made across all San Leandro Unified School District campuses:
Fresh & Nutritious Meals
All school meals exceed federal USDA dietary guidelines, featuring 100% whole grains, low sodium, zero artificial trans fats, and abundant California-grown fruits and vegetables.
Smart Snacks in School
All foods and beverages sold outside the reimbursable meal program (a la carte, vending machines, student stores) meet California Smart Snacks nutrition standards.
Physical Education & Activity
Sequential, standards-based PE instruction delivers moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, with elementary recess and secondary sports promoting lifelong fitness.
Health Education Curriculum
Comprehensive health curricula emphasize nutrition literacy, portion awareness, mindful eating, stress management, and the benefits of daily hydration.
Farm to School & Garden Education
School garden spaces and local farm partnerships connect students directly with where their food originates, fostering agricultural literacy and fresh taste preference.
Healthy Classroom Celebrations
Encouraging celebration alternatives that prioritize physical activity, games, and wholesome fruit/veggie snacks rather than sugary confections and sodas.
Staff Wellness & Role Modeling
Promoting staff health initiatives, walking challenges, and healthy campus workplaces where educators model positive nutrition and active lifestyles.
Water Access Throughout Campus
Free, clean, potable drinking water is readily accessible to all students during mealtimes and across all school campuses via modern hydration refill stations.
Community & Family Engagement
Inviting parents, students, nurses, and community health leaders to participate in the SLUSD Triennial Wellness Committee assessment and public policy review.
